【English Translation】 The Biography of Naropa's Twelve Hardships Homage to the Guru! It is said that Jowo Naropa (the尊者) was from Kashmir (Kache) in India. In a cemetery in Kashmir, he recited the Hevajra (勝樂金剛) mantra through the seven-letter door, and at dawn, he had recited one million times, causing the earth to shake. He received a prophecy: 'Go to the east of India, where there is a guru named Tilopa. You have a connection with him.' So, Naropa set out to meet Tilopa, but on the way, he regretted it, thinking, 'Eastern India is vast, and I didn't ask where Tilopa lives.' He continued, arriving at a monastery called 'Edana Tsuggi Norbu.' Naropa requested to teach there, and the monks also requested him to teach. 【English Translation】 First, there are the twelve hardships performed by Tilopa. Also, when Naropa followed Tilopa to a certain place, generally in the southern Nepal area, there were many aquatic creatures, especially in a body of water about an arm's length wide, full of aquatic creatures. Tilopa was unwilling to wade through, so Naropa said, 'Shall I make a bridge so that the Lama can walk over me?' Tilopa said, 'Okay.' So Naropa stretched his arms to the other side and his legs to this side, and Tilopa walked over him, making a 'Jeb' sound, and then quickly passed. When Naropa stood up, the aquatic creatures stuck to his body. As soon as the first one bit, the next one completely stuck, causing unbearable pain. 【English Translation】 Then Nabu spoke with devotion and proceeded. Soon, all his flesh and skin turned into pus, leaving only a pile of white bones. Just as his consciousness was about to fade, Tilopa appeared and asked, 'What wrong have you done?' Naropa replied, 'I have acted exactly as the Lama instructed, and now I am about to die.' Tilopa said, 'You have done nothing wrong.' With that, he grabbed Naropa's hand and snapped his fingers, and Naropa immediately recovered as before. This was the fifth test. During all these times, Naropa thought, 'Do I not have faith in Naropa?' But then he thought, 'My faith in the Lama has never wavered. To be able to walk with a Lama like the Buddha, I have truly accumulated great merit.' Thus, his faith in the Lama increased, thereby purifying the two obscurations and receiving blessings. Later, Tilopa said to Naropa, 'Now you should also meditate, and I will also meditate.' Tilopa said that what he had attained was the great meditation without meditation, the inconceivable great samadhi, so there was no need to meditate further. Naropa went out begging for food and went to the house of someone who was holding a sacrifice. There was a kind of food there that he had never tasted before, which was very delicious and rich in flavor. He thought, 'I should take some back to offer to my Lama Tilopa.' So he took the food back to see Tilopa. Although Tilopa had no discriminating thoughts about the taste of food, in order to allow Naropa to accumulate merit, he swallowed it in large gulps, making a loud noise. Naropa thought, 'No matter what food I offer to my Lama, he does not discriminate between good and bad, but this time he seems very happy.' So Naropa asked, 'Should I go and get some more to offer you?' Tilopa said, 'Okay.' Naropa returned to the place where the sacrifice had been held before and found that the food was gone, only an empty container was left. He picked it up and ran away, and as a result, he was caught twice in one day and punished. [Like the beggars in Tibet, he was not beaten many times.] There, everyone hit him with sticks, and his body was beaten into a pulp. This was the seventh test. Tilopa also said, 'A minister's wife is coming by sitting in a palanquin, can you grab her?' Naropa grabbed her, and as a result, he was beaten badly by her. This was the eighth test. On another occasion, a king's wife was sitting in a palanquin.

【English Translation】 Then, as the sparks of fire appeared one by one, he said, 'Can you catch them?' When he caught them, he was beaten again. That was the ninth hardship. Can the king's consort hit the target? Whatever (Naropa) said, he dared not disobey, thinking, 'Even if I die, I must be beaten.' So, he took the consort away with Zan as a witness. There, the king cut off both his ankles and both his wrists. Just as he thought he would surely die this time, Tilopa came, joined all the severed limbs, snapped his fingers, and restored him as before. Thus, ten hardships were completed. Naropa thought, 'This lama clearly likes women's playthings, and since he likes women, I should find one to offer him.' So, he found a very beautiful woman and offered her to him, and Tilopa was very pleased. At this time, that woman was very contemptuous of the master Naropa, [in speech,] contemptuous in her gaze, contemptuous of whatever (Naropa) did. Tilopa said, 'She does not respect me, but respects him,' and shouted loudly next to that woman.
